What will I learn?

In this class you will learn two traditional Japanese Shibori techniques, Guntai and Makiage shibori, that combine stitching and binding together to make bounded patterns.

Content:

– How to tie the basic kamosage knot used to secure all bound work
– How to tie the quilters knot and the surgeons knot required for all stitched work
– How to create bounded side to side stitched patterns (these patterns are known as “Guntai” or Military shibori as they were often used to decorate samurai clothing
– How to sew an outline and bind it with Kumo spiderweb binding (these patterns are known as “Makiage”)
– How to dye your fabrics in a genuine indigo vat
– How to set up and maintain your own indigo vat at home

Who is this class for?: Beginner / looking for an introduction to Shibori

Duration: 3 hours

Location: This class is available at the Artist’s studio in Muswell Hill and at Fabrications on Broadway market in Hackney.

What do I need to provide myself?

  • Rubber gloves (these must cover the wrist and should be Marigolds or similar)

  • A strong plastic bag to take your wet work home in

  • An apron/old clothes (as indigo will stain if splashed onto your clothes)

All fabric, thread and dye is included in this class. You are welcome to bring you own fabric to work on if you prefer. If so, it must have been scoured (washed with detergent) to remove any preserving chemicals or bought PFD (prepared for dyeing).
