Exploring the Shibori Circle - various shibori techniques - Classroom based
The following classes are recommended for further study:
Beginner’s Shibori - the building blocks of stitching and binding
Itajime Shibori - using boards and clamps
Boshi Shibori - the use of capping and reserved grounds
Guntai and Makiage Shibori - bounded patterns
Hishaki-nui Shibori - stitched patterns worked on the fold
Shine Ire Shibori - using a rope core to make traditional patterns - Tesuji (stripes), Yanagi (Willow) and Hinode (Sunrise)
Katano Shibori - stitched work on pleated fabric
What will I learn?
In this class you will learn a variety of stitched Shibori patterns all based around the circle form.
Circles are a common motif in Shibori and work very well in combination to make repeating patterns.
Content:
– How to make the Shibori starting and ending knots to create tight, crisp patterns
– How to sew different types of Shibori circles:
Simple nui, ori nui and maki nui stitched circles
Makiage bounded spiderweb patterns
Boshi (capped) circles with and without visible stitches
The traditional Karamatsu (Larch pattern) - a woodgrain effect
Grid circles and other variations will be presented if time permits
– How to dye your fabric in a genuine indigo vat
– How to set up and maintain your own indigo vat at home
Who is this class for?: Beginner’s - Suitable for all
Duration: 6 hours (Full day)
Location: This class is available at the Artist’s studio in Muswell Hill and at Fabrications on Broadway market in Hackney.
What do I need to provide myself?
Rubber gloves (these must cover the wrist and should be Marigolds or similar)
A strong plastic bag to take your wet work home in
An apron/old clothes (as indigo will stain if splashed onto your clothes)
All fabric, thread and dye is included in this class.
An organic bamboo cotton scarf is included in the class price as a project
