Itajime shibori silk scarf - cyan blue, gold, orange and dark pink
Itajime shibori silk scarf - cyan blue, gold, orange and dark pink
With traditional Itajime shibori you fold and clamp your fabric to keep the dye out of certain areas, making repeating kaleidoscope patterns through the folding process.
I prefer to inject the silk dyes directly into the folded silk, saturating it with colour and creating vibrant silk scarves, rich with pattern and interest.
The Itajime parcels are produced by folding the silk into equilateral triangles concertinawise like a fan. Each fold is pressed and it can be quite fiddly across the length of a long silk scarf…
Once folded and pressed, the parcels are injected with high quality Dupont silk dyes using pipettes and steamed to fix the colour.
The whole process is very enjoyable and it’s always a treat to see how the pattern has turned out once the parcels have been steamed.
