Itajime shibori silk scarf - Teal, orange, burgundy and purple
Itajime shibori silk scarf - Teal, orange, burgundy and purple
Soft, lustrous habotai silk is my choice for the colourful hand dyed shibori scarves I make. They can be worn with a smart or casual outfit and come in many different colour ways.
They are also the perfect gift as they wrap up small and are very light.
Itajime usually involves folding, followed by clamping to make repeating patterns but I like to inject the silk dyes directly instead using a pipette, which distributes the colour beautifully throughout the folded parcel.
The parcels are made using a type of Shibori folding called “Kikko”, with the silk being pressed into equilateral triangles. These form honeycomb shapes when opened out.
The fun bit is mixing the colours and trying out different combinations (following the rules of colour combining, of course!)
The dyed silk parcels are then steamed to fix the colour.
I enjoy making these as you never really what your pattern will be until you’ve opened them.
