Itajime shibori silk scarf - Blues and a little teal
Itajime shibori silk scarf - Blues and a little teal

Itajime shibori typically involves concertina folding and clamping fabric to create kaleidoscopic patterns but I would rather inject the silk dyes directly into the silk parcels, which gives a wonderful colour distribution.
The process utilises a type of Shibori folding called “Kikko”, with the silk being pressed into equilateral triangles.
Half the fun is mixing the colours and choosing where to inject them.
The resulting parcels are then steamed to fix the colour.
I love making these scarves as you never really know what the pattern will look like until you open the steamed parcels! It’s a bit like opening a present…
