Itajime shibori silk scarf - Bright pink, grey, black and white
I use a soft habotai silk for my colourful hand dyed shibori scarves. They can be worn with a casual outfit but look great styled for a night out too.
They are also the perfect gift as they wrap up small and are very light.
Traditional Itajime shibori involves folding, followed by clamping to make repeating patterns with resist areas retaining the original colour of the fabric.
When I make these silk scarves I prefer to inject the silk dyes directly instead using a pipette, which distributes the colour nicely throughout the whole of the folded parcel.
The parcels are formed using a Shibori folding technique called “Kikko”, with the silk scarf being pressed with the iron into equilateral triangles through concertina folding. The folding process creates honeycomb patterns when opened.
The best part for me is mixing the colours and combining them to create colourful mixes (usually following the rules of colour combining, of course!)
The resultant dyed silk parcels are then steamed in silver foil parcels to fix the colour.
Some colours just love each other and I think this one is just great!
