Itajime usually involves folding and clamping to create repeating patterns but I like to inject the silk dyes directly into the silk instead using a pipette, which distributes the colour wonderfully throughout the folded parcel.

The process requires a type of Shibori folding called “Kikko”, with the silk being pressed into equilateral triangles, which form honeycomb shapes when opened out.

These parcels are then steamed to fix the colour.

I love making these scarves as you never really know exactly how the pattern will turn out until you’ve opened them.
